According to a new law published in the Belgian Monitor, international calls concerning two Belgian numbers will be blocked… but rest assured, you will still be able to make calls when you are on vacation!
Operators have three to six months to comply: the new law which stipulates that international calls from a Belgian number to a Belgian number will be blocked, with some exceptions. The goal is very simple: to fight against identity theft in the context of certain telephone frauds. In fact, many fraudulent calls are made from abroad by taking over the telephone identity of a Belgian institution such as a bank.
But then, does that mean that you will no longer be able to call your loved ones when you are abroad? No ! Because as explained above, the law has exceptions. More specifically, Belgian roaming numbers, as well as Belgian companies whose call centers use the cloud, will be able to continue to operate. If for you, the simple fact of being “roaming” should be enough to identify you as an exception, for the companies mentioned above, it is a little more complex: they will have to report to their operator.
At the top of the “food chain”, a single organization: the BIPT (Belgian Institute of Postal Services and Telecommunications) which will monitor compliance with this new regulation, even if it means encroaching on operators, and suspending the exceptions granted by a operator.
The organization was also very pleased with this new feature, which is seen as a real means of combating telephone fraud. It is by royal decree in the Belgian Monitor, which publishes all laws, that this decision has now had legal force since this Thursday. The “law” in question had already been under discussion for several months, and is very probably one of the very last decisions emanating from the De Croo government, with the elections and the more or less rapid establishment of a new federal executive body. .
