These gadgets are used for several reasons, including preventing plates from being photographed at toll booths or by speed or red light cameras.
However, these products become more worrying when they are used in crimes.
“You have a major theft, people leave with a vehicle and witnesses can see the plate. There, they will no longer see it,” says the former Minister of Transport, Robert Poëti, in an interview with LCN.
The Journal reported on Monday that several police officers said they were “concerned” by these illegal gadgets.
Whether they are used to avoid a simple ticket or to commit more serious crimes, these gadgets are “a significant problem” for the former Minister of Transport.
“It’s not just about money. This is a dummy plate, meaning you modify your plate. It’s non-compliant, but the fines are not severe enough,” said the former minister.
To prevent motorists from using these accessories to prevent their license plates from being read, Robert Poëti is of the opinion that harsher penalties are needed.
“I must admit, if we don’t make a change to the Highway Safety Code to lose 9 demerit points and a $1,000 fine, it won’t work because the person will only count on a few $100, it “It still pays to go to places where there are cameras,” he believes.
