Two Egis projects won top awards at the New Zealand Property Industry Awards in Auckland on Friday June 14, 2024.

Te Pou ō Mata-Au | Clutha District War Memorial & Community CenterBalclutha, won an award for excellence in the civic, health and artistic real estate category, and Bluebird Foods Automated WarehouseAuckland, has won an award of merit in the CBRE industrial property category.

Organized by the Property Council New Zealand, the Property Industry Awards are New Zealand’s most prestigious property awards program, celebrating excellence in design and innovation in the built environment and recognizing projects delivering a return exceptional or service potential on the investment of funds, thereby creating value for owners, tenants and the community at large.

Design considerations for the Clutha District War Memorial & Community Center of NZ$20 million puts sustainability at the forefront. A feature of the structure is its corten steel entrance and wide eaves to reduce solar gain, increase the durability of the main structure and maintain thermal comfort. Taking into account the embodied carbon of the building, concrete was only used in limited areas for the performance needs of the building. This meant less weight to support in the event of an earthquake and therefore less concrete needed in the foundations, reducing the overall carbon of the project.

THE Bluebird Foods Automated Warehouse is a next-generation industrial warehouse built for New Zealand snack manufacturer Bluebird, which houses a state-of-the-art Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) worth NZ$26 million. The warehouse extends over 3,438 m² and with a peak of 38 m, it offers an internal volume of approximately 120,330 m³. The challenge for Bluebird was to consolidate multiple storage operations into one streamlined facility. The solution developed in collaboration with property and construction experts at Calder Stewart was to build upwards, rather than outwards. As delivery of the facility approached, many challenges had to be resolved, including the construction of a new warehouse on an operational site within the Auckland Airport air corridor. The height of the building also required new thinking when it came to building codes and fire prevention.

An innovative solution using earth bolts to secure support of the steel structure during construction reduced the need for precast concrete retaining ballast and therefore reduced embodied carbon in the project.
