Egyptian garlic prices have seen several increases this season, due to limited volumes and high demand, according to Mohamed Shaaban, Managing Director of Garlico.

“Prices increased from the start of the season, due to the halving of volumes in Egypt, then experienced several successive increases. Producers are now preparing to stockpile garlic seeds for planting in August. We so we expect a further increase at the end of June. There will be less quantity available while the demand for garlic remains high,” says Shaaban.

According to Shaaban, exporters will face the challenge of maintaining consistent quality throughout the rest of the season. He adds: “Finding good quality will remain a challenge. But even for second quality garlic, we have strong demand from Taiwan and Brazil.”

Demand for Egyptian garlic has been exceptionally high this season. Shaaban says: “We exported more than in any previous season to Europe, particularly Spain. Demand was also strong from the United States, Canada, Brazil and Taiwan. All our markets maintained a strong strong demand throughout the season, with the possible exception of Australia.”

The producer concludes, “At Garlico we had anticipated the demand with a number of measures, such as increasing the surface area and purchasing a new sorting line. This season we have only used varieties with large bulbs, up to 7 cm, which we sell under our brand Zain. We have also offered our regular customers lower prices compared to the market price.
