On Saturday, November 9, shortly before 10 a.m., a man broke through the wall of the Santo Espíritu del Monte monastery, located in Gilet, near Valencia, Spain. He then started looking for minuses in their room and hitting them when he came across one.
According to witnesses, he shouted “I am Jesus Christ” and told his victims he wanted to kill them. Seven religious people live here and four were injured, including one, aged 76, seriously in the head. He was taken by ambulance to Sagunto hospital. The three other injured people, 57, 66 and 95 years old, present various traumas and bruises, according to “El Pais”.
A fifth monk intervened, confronted the attacker and made him flee. The last two monks were not attacked. The place also has a guest house, but there was none that day. The assailant, presented as disturbed, fled. He is described as a man of 30 to 40 years of robust build. He is wanted by the police.
In the monastery he did not break or steal anything. He apparently came only to attack the monks. The Franciscan order, to which these monks belong, sent a statement asking the attacker “to be aware of the damage and to be able to rectify behavior which is not at all typical of the human condition”.
