(Ecofin Agency) – The IATA Sustainable Aviation Fuels Register is in line with the 2050 objective set to achieve zero carbon emissions in the global aviation industry.

Kenya Airways (KQ) has been chosen by the International Air Transport Association to coordinate the implementation of the Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) Registry in the Africa region.

This program, unveiled at the beginning of June at the IATA annual meeting, should make it possible to count the rate of use of SAF by companies and to measure the impact through declarations confirming the reduction threshold. emissions achieved. This will enable companies and their customers to accurately report emissions reductions, in accordance with reporting obligations and international standards.

The choice of KQ comes as the carrier was recognized by IATA as a pioneer in the use of SAF on a long-haul flight from Africa to Europe in October 2023.

“By playing a crucial role in the development of the register, KQ will significantly contribute to building confidence in the SAF as a viable solution to minimizing the environmental impact of aviation” said Allan Kilavuka, CEO of the Kenyan carrier.

The pilot phase of this program is supported around the world by 16 other national airlines, a group of private air carriers, 6 national civil aviation authorities, the aircraft manufacturers Airbus, Boeing and GE Aerospace, and the fuel producer World Energy.

The register should help assess whether IATA’s forecasts are being met, which expects SAF production to triple in 2024, to 1.5 million tonnes. This would represent 0.53% of aviation fuel needs in 2024.
