MI’m a banker or my insurer. In the collective imagination, the one who manages your finances is a man. An image maintained in 2024: the CEOs in the sector, those who lead the teams – Belgian finance has around 80,000 employees – and appear in the media, are in the vast majority gentlemen in suits.
However, according to the latest report from Wo.men in Finance, a sectoral initiative to encourage internal gender diversity, which brings together 63 members (90% of the sector in number of employees), a majority of people employed in banks and insurance companies are… women (52.9%).
Problem: this proportion erodes significantly as you move up the corporate ladder. No doubt, the glass ceiling – even if since the start of the measures and initiatives taken in this area five years ago, it has cracked slightly – is still a reality.
