SBB and Trenitalia announced on Friday that they will offer direct trains from Zurich to Florence and Livorno, and vice versa, from 2026. An additional connection will also be introduced between Zurich, Milan and Venice
The partnership between Trenitalia and the CFF began in 2009 and is a success, note the CFF in a press release. The two railway companies have thus extended their collaboration for several years by signing a new cooperation agreement.
Hailing a “proven partnership”, Trenitalia director Luigi Corradi for his part said he expected demand for cross-border connections between the two countries to increase over the coming years.
New trains
To develop the offer, the CFF ordered four new Giruno trainsets last February. These complement the existing fleet of 29 trains already in service and the seven trains ordered in 2022.
The two railway companies also presented a new Eurocity train which will run between the two countries and announced the modernization of Trenitalia’s trains. These feature 100% recycled plastic seat covers, new services and an “updated design”, according to the company.
In 2023, CFF and Trenitalia transported around 500,000 more passengers than in 2019 between the two countries. A total of 2.4 million people in total traveled by train between Switzerland and Italy last year.
