A Quebec SME has found a way to partially counter the housing crisis in Montreal and Toronto with a new sofa bed, the first in the world that can be delivered in boxes, designed for apartments with little living space.

The Neptune sofa bed from the Cozey company, which recently obtained a $10 million investment from the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, is modular. This product designed and created in Montreal is able to adapt to the available space which is increasingly limited in new apartments in Montreal and Toronto.

“It’s the first sofa bed that can be delivered in boxes in the world,” explains Frédéric Aubé, CEO of Cozey, with pride. Since day 1 of our company, we have been working on the design of a sofa bed in boxes, the same concept as our other products, deliverable and which does not need tools to assemble it.

“It’s pretty revolutionary.”

In Montreal as in Toronto, it is not uncommon to see apartments that have a single room where the tenant sleeps, eats and prepares meals.

“Our main market is small apartments or condos where we can save space,” adds the 27-year-old entrepreneur. This is a problem that we wanted to tackle.

“We wanted to innovate to help people who were looking for a turnkey solution.”

Depending on the desired configuration and the number of seats, the price varies between $1,200 and $5,500. The Neptune can accommodate single and double beds.

Then, when moving, no need to have four people to carry it up the stairs with a plan worthy of the video game Tetris. It disassembles into several pieces which can be transported easily.

“If you have a three-seater sofa and you have more space, you can expand it over time,” says Aubé.

A long process

Before declaring victory, Aubé, his right-hand man, Dominic Létourneau, and his team had to work hard to arrive at the sofa bed which will be available online today and at Cozey’s only store in Toronto .

“It’s quite complex to fit large parts into boxes. We had to cut them out and draw them. The mechanisms were designed especially for this model,” he explains.

The new sofa bed is not the only new product launched by Cozey. The SME began to market other products for the home, such as coffee and side tables as well as decorative accessories.

A kitchen table should see the light of day in the next year.

A store in Montreal in 2025

The company, which has 140 employees, including 110 in Quebec, has the wind in its sails. In addition to having warehouses in Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto, Cozey has just opened in the United States.

A warehouse in Los Angeles is operational and another in New Jersey is about to open to serve US customers.

As for stores, Aubé indicates that his company will have a store in Montreal in 2025. The location has not yet been finalized. The establishment of a store in Vancouver is also in the cards.
