10 stores should open throughout Belgium!

We tested the Russian competitor of Lidl and Aldi which has just opened in Boussu and we compared the prices!

A new supermarket has just opened its doors in Boussu: MyPrice. Serious competition for hard-discount stores. We visited it and compared prices with the neighboring Aldi. The first customers are in any case rather delighted.

Behind the brand with a resolutely American name, we find a Russian group which had already appeared on the Belgian market under the name “Mere”.

Three stores opened their doors at the same time: two in Flanders and one in Wallonia, in Boussu. We visited it.

In the parking lot of the small shopping complex, you can’t miss the big red sign and the message “We are open”. And it works, because quite a few customers we encountered this Monday stopped out of curiosity as they passed by. When you enter the store, you immediately understand that it is a warehouse. Here, there are no frills or displays, just shelves where the merchandise is arranged right in the cardboard boxes. A large quantity of toilet paper, a bucket and mop, doormats, plastic storage bins… We start with the “home” section.

Many posters are posted, you can read the price, the description of the item and above all, its origin. The products come from everywhere: China, Vietnam, Serbia, Poland, Turkey, Chile… At the back, a few glass chest freezers and a refrigerated space protected by plastic strips, like at Colruyt. In this space, we find cold meats and cured meats mainly from Lithuania. Smoked sausages, dried pork ham…

In the other sections, we find a lot of dried fruits sold in large packages of 1 kg (almonds, nuts, etc.), spices, sweets, sodas of unknown brands, water, etc. But also gardening gloves, stoves, laundry. In short, there is everything, but the idea is not to go there with a precise shopping list because you can’t find everything there.

Customers eager for good deals

In any case, the customers we met there believe they got good deals:

“The prices are attractive! For example, €5 for 5 liters of liquid detergent. Or even dried fruits sold by the kilo. The coffee is not expensive either, now you still have to taste it,” says a couple from Jemappes. “There’s a bit of everything, I even saw a can of car oil. It’s cheaper than Aldi but there aren’t enough products at the moment.”

“I bought a set of 6 glasses for €3, drinks, frozen foods… But these are not brands that we know to see,” says Corinne, who came with Christine, from Dour.

“The prices are affordable. Obviously, at the moment, we are trying to compare to see if it is more affordable to buy in larger packages, because there are still 5 of us at home,” says Sophie, from Quaregnon. She paid €14 at the checkout.

“I bought a frying pan for €4.35, coffee for €3 and gloves for €2 or so. For independents or large families, it can be interesting. But for households of 1 or 2 people, these are large packages,” indicate two Boussutoises.
