Faced with the explosion in the uses of AI on a global scale, Jensen Huang, the boss of Nvidia, has decided to put both feet in the dish regarding Europe’s positioning in this sector. The least we can say is that he didn’t mince his words!
The United States is today the driving force in the development of artificial intelligence : OpenAI, Google, Meta, Microsoft or even Apple to a lesser extent, many American companies today have one or more AI to stay in the race. Faced with the USA, China has decided to work harder… But what about Europe?
“We have to speed up”
Visiting Denmark to participate in the inauguration of the Gefion supercomputer which took place in Copenhagen, the boss of Nvidia gave his opinion on the situation in Europe. If he was mainly present at the event because the new supercomputer embeds 1528 Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPUs, artificial intelligence was inevitably on everyone’s lips.
“The EU must accelerate progress in the field of AI”declared Jensen Huang, quoted by the Reuters agency. “Every country is waking up to the realization that data is a national resource. »
It’s a fact: Europe today has very few companies whose artificial intelligence technologies can display the ambition to compete with American or Chinese firms. In France, Mistral AI is one of the European references and even attracted the attention of Microsoft, which became one of the main investors. It is legitimate to wonder how long it will take for Mistral AI to end up under American control for funding issues…
Denmark is banking on AI in healthcare
In this context, Denmark undoubtedly has a card to play. This country, a member of the EU since 1973 – but which does not have the euro, small subtlety – intends to use its new Gefion supercomputer to accelerate the discovery of new medical treatmentsidentify diseases and design new drugs. It’s not for nothing if this huge project was co-financed by the Danish Export and Investment Fund and the Novo Nordisk Foundationwhich belongs to the company of the very lucrative Ozempic, a revolutionary treatment for type 2 diabetes.
“The era of computer-assisted drug discovery must be in this decade”said Jensen Huang. “This is the decade of digital biology. » And, clearly, Nvidia has everything to gain from Europe finally diving into the development of artificial intelligencesince the firm’s GPUs are used en masse by companies working in this field. ChatGPT, OpenAI’s well-known bot, uses thousands of them to function. Recommendations far from trivial, therefore, but that does not take away from the fact that many observers agree with the boss of Nvidia.
