What is this electric assist bike from Decathlon?

The Elops LD 500 E has a design different from other Decathlon electric bikes. Its resolutely modern look is accompanied by graceful lines which give the city bike the slight appearance of a racing bike. The VAE is available in two frames: a high frame and a semi-closed frame, easier to step over. In terms of comfort, the B’twin Sport 500 foam saddle guarantees good comfort during journeys, provided you avoid bumpy roads. Although the tires absorb shock, the bike is not designed for rougher roads.

The Elops LD 500 E has a 250 W brushless motor on the rear hub, capable of delivering a torque of 45 Nm. Pedaling is fluid and progressive, and the two wheels offer great versatility thanks to its 8-speed transmission. At 23 kg on the scale, it’s not the lightest of bikes, but once you get going, it’s very maneuverable and easy to ride. The hydraulic disc brakes are effective and provide a good feeling of security.

10 things to know before buying an e-bike

Is this Decathlon VAE worth it at this price?

Less than €200 reduction is a good deal, especially with state aid. The Elops LD 500 E has several assistance modes, from Economic assistance to a Boost mode. The first provides 70% assistance and extends the range up to 115 km. Boost mode draws all the power from the motor for optimal assistance, at the expense of the battery. With this last mode, you can still count on 60 km of autonomy. Standard mode strikes the right balance. Note that Walk Mode provides assistance when you push your bike. Allow 7 hours to recharge the battery.

Finally, the Decathlon e-bike comes with a mudguard, a luggage rack, a front headlight and an LCD screen. The latter displays the selected mode, the speed or the remaining autonomy. It also has a USB port for charging your smartphone.
