Numerous devices which all have a very specific aim: to reduce the number of road accidents.

In 2023, 3,170 people were killed on French roads. The European Union has therefore decided to act and major changes will come into force this summer. From July 7, 2024, all new vehicles must now be equipped with around thirty new safety devices.

Among them, one overspeed alert with automatic sign reading. But that’s not all, the presence of a Black Box (event data recorder) will also now be mandatory in all new vehicles. As on planes, this device will make it possible to analyze the data collected before an accident.

Other equipment, such as fatigue and drowsiness detectorsadaptive cruise control or even lane crossing alerts will also become mandatory from next summer, explains the European Parliament.

Newly active at each startup

Finally, a pre-installation allowing a breathalyzer to be carried out before starting the car will also be mandatory. The purpose of this equipment is to prevent a driver who has consumed alcohol from getting behind the wheel and therefore putting his life and that of others in danger.

To prevent motorists from deactivating this new equipment (the alerts in particular), they will become active again each time the vehicle is started. As a reminder, the European Union wants to save nearly 25,000 lives by 2038 and has set itself the objective of “zero deaths on the roads by 2050.
