Around 230,000 civil servants will be increased by 6 cents gross on November 1 to avoid being paid below the minimum wage

This monthly increase will be paid via a “differential compensation”, that is to say a bonus, and not in the form of an increase in the basic salary.

The remuneration of“environ 230 000 agents” public employees will be increased by 6 cents on November 1 to prevent them from being paid below the minimum wage, the administration announced to AFP on Friday October 18. During his general policy speech at the beginning of October, the Prime Minister promised an increase in the minimum wage of 2% on November 1, which will bring it to 1,801.80 euros gross per month. However, the minimum salary for civil servants, set at 1,801.74 euros gross, is today 6 cents lower than the future amount of the minimum wage.

Since public employees cannot be paid below the minimum wage, the General Directorate of Administration and Civil Service (DGAFP) therefore announced to the unions on Thursday evening that the minimum salary would be increased by 6 cents on November 1, via a “differential compensation”that is to say a bonus, and not in the form of an increase in basic salary. This revaluation will concern “environ 230 000 agents” of the 5.7 million in the civil service, specifies the DGAFP.

The CGT Civil Service described the increase as “derisory” and felt that she could not “be received only as a mark of contempt and provocation by the personnel concerned”. While the unions are demanding in unison a general increase in remuneration, as the government had agreed to in 2022 (+3.5%) and 2023 (+1.5%), the CGT judges that this revaluation of the minimum salary “does not respond in any way to the salary emergency”.
