According to INSEE, the number of business creations fell below 90,000 monthly creations last September.

The number of businesses created in fell “significantly” in September compared to the previous month, falling below the 90,000 monthly creation mark for the first time since July 2023, INSEE said on Friday. With 87,544 businesses created in September, compared to 92,145 in August, business creations fell by 5% over one month and are down for the fourth month in a row.

“This new decline comes both from that of traditional business creations (-4.1% in September after -2.0% in August) and from that of registrations of micro-entrepreneurs (-5.5% after – 0.5%)”, details INSEE in a press release.

The total number of companies created over the last twelve months (October 2023-September 2024) nevertheless remains almost 6% higher than the company creations recorded over the same period a year earlier (October 2022-September 2023).

“In all sectors”

In detail in September, 56,712 micro-enterprises and 30,832 traditional companies were created in France. From a sectoral point of view, apart from education, health and social action where business creations remained “almost stable” in September (-0.1%), they decreased ” in all sectors”, notes INSEE.

“They fell sharply again in the manufacturing industry (-7.5% after -6.0% in August), household services (-6.3% after -7.5%) and very sharply in construction (-15.0% after -6.2%)”, illustrate the national statisticians.

In addition, business creations “fall back significantly in (…) business support (-7.2% after -1.2%), real estate activities (-4.6% after +1.0 %), trade and repair of automobiles and motorcycles (-3.7% after +1.2%) and financial and insurance activities (-1.2% after +3.7%). INSEE also revised its figures for the month of August downwards on Friday, indicating that business creations had finally fallen by 1% compared to July and not by 0.5%.
