From July 1, all new cars put into circulation in Europe must be equipped with information and intelligent speed adaptation (AIV) systems, explains The Dispatch.

50, 80, 110… In order to ensure that motorists respect speed limits, the European Union requires manufacturers to equip each vehicle with information and intelligent speed adaptation (AIV) systems. Concretely, from July 1, all new cars will be able to “read” road signs or even GPS data, which will then alert the driver if he is driving too fast, explains The Dispatch.

Thus, the car will not slow down on its own, but will encourage motorists to do so, with the aim of reducing the number of accidents in Europe. The government specifies that a visual and audible alert will warn the driver. “For the moment, the motorist remains in control of his vehicle and can always ‘force’ acceleration”, explains the government. This measure, dating from 2019, is included in the European Road Safety Charter.

3,170 people died on the roads in France in 2023

However, certain brands, such as Renault, will offer their customers more restrictive systems which will more strongly encourage drivers to decelerate. Warning or speed control features already exist on certain car models, but information and intelligent speed adaptation (AIV) systems will now be mandatory, pushing the industry to adapt. The objective of the European Union is to encourage all road users to exercise caution and respect signs to minimize the risk of accidents. As recalled The Dispatchin 2023, 3,170 people died on the roads of mainland France.
