After Ryanair, Eurowings announces the elimination of several destinations in Europe and Africa

AAfter Ryanair, Eurowings will no longer serve the German city of Hamburg. The German low-cost airline, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, is the market leader there, according to its own words. Eurowings has 16 aircraft there and offers 70 destinations.

Initially, more than a thousand flights will be canceled by 2025, Eurowings explained in a press release on Friday. The domestic connection between Cologne and Bonn will be canceled with the summer flight schedule. Six other destinations in Europe and North Africa will no longer be served.

“The reduced supply significantly weakens the direct connection to Hamburg and makes flights from the Hanseatic city significantly more expensive,” said Jens Bischof, CEO of the company. For this, he points an accusing finger at the airport’s “plans for a completely disproportionate increase in fees”.

On Thursday, Ryanair already announced that it would stop serving Dortmund, Dresden and Leipzig next year and reduce the number of flights to Hamburg and Berlin by 60% and 20% respectively. The reason is a dispute with the German government over increased taxes, which has made flights in Germany more expensive than elsewhere, the Irish budget airline said.
