The big test of brands: difficult to find the best meatballs in tomato sauce (COMPARISON)

New episode of our consumer test series. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the six supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl, Intermarché and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands to “white products” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of twenty points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality-ratio. price. This week, we tested the meatballs in tomato sauce. For your information, we did not find any product at Aldi and Intermarché.

The big test of brands: too many identical recipes… and mediocre for powdered puree (COMPARATIVE)

Appearance of the packaging: we chose the formula in the fresh section for this test. No jars or frozen foods, therefore. For Colruyt, we were treated to a very basic package but from the butcher’s shop. In terms of freshness, that’s reassuring. Plus, the container goes straight into the oven. Practical. For Delhaize and Lidl, it couldn’t have been simpler, and even too simple. A plastic tray, a small logo and that’s it. We cannot say that it attracts the eye in a radius. On the other hand, it was quite the opposite for Carrefour, with a tray well highlighted by cardboard packaging and a beautiful photo. The little extra: the dish is sold with a puree.

The big test of brands: for chocolate, the essential Nutella is surpassed by several copies! (COMPARATIVE)

Product appearance: we liked the preparation sold by Colruyt. It was generous in meat and sauce and the smell really made you want to taste it. For Delhaize, the sauce was much too liquid, and the meatballs were a little stingy… It wasn’t any better at Lidl. For Carrefour, on the other hand, it was more gourmet and related to the sauce, and generous in meatballs.

Nutritional value : Nutri-Score C for Carrefour and Colruyt, B for Delhaize and Lidl.

Label readability: for Colruyt, it wasn’t a great label. Too small, and also located under the tray. It’s complicated to see clearly without putting it everywhere. For Delhaize, it was almost unreadable, the same for Lidl, even if it was a little better all the same. Carrefour, on the other hand, is doing much better than the others.

The big test of brands: few references, and successes, for Brazilian pies (COMPARATIVE)

Taste : we start with Colruyt. We were not at all disappointed by this preparation. The meatballs had a very good taste, and, above all, the sauce was not too acidic, as can be the case for a ready-made tomato sauce. For Delhaize, we found this really bad. The meat had no taste and the sauce was way too acidic and watery. On the Lidl side, it was better in terms of sauce, less acidic and more delicious, but the meatballs were not good and too few in number. Finally, Carrefour raised the level a little by placing itself just behind Colruyt. It was a lot more industrial, but the meat tasted really good. The sauce was a little disappointing.

Value for money: here are the prices in order for a portion for two people: Colruyt (€9.63), Carrefour (€4.85), Delhaize (€3.99) and Lidl (€3.49).
