For Ecolo, ministers and deputies are overpaid: “We want to reduce their salaries by 2,500 euros net”

This Monday, Jean-Marc Nollet was Martin Buxant’s guest on the RTL info set in the “home stretch” before the elections which will take place on June 9. Several themes were discussed, such as the climate and purchasing power.

Concerning the good governance that Ecolo would like to apply, the co-president of the Greens was clear: he wants to reduce the salaries of ministers and deputies. “We need a shock of confidence to reestablish this link between citizens and politicians“, begins Jean-Marc Nollet. “We want to reduce the salaries of deputies and ministers by 2,500 euros net. We want to put an end to privileges, special regimes“.

However, a measure like this might not please everyone and could therefore be complicated to vote on. “I know how difficult it is for traditional parties to imagine doing this. As an environmentalist, we think it is time to give power back to the citizen“.

“We don’t go into politics to make money”

With this measure, Ecolo would like to send a message to citizens: politicians are there for the citizen and not to make money. “At Ecolo, elected officials already hand over 50% of their salary. We now demand that it be the reduction at the Source. The message is to give decision-making power back to the citizen“, concludes Jean-Marc Nollet.
