Three fishermen are missing after the capsizing of a canoe in the Saint-Louis breach announced the Local Artisanal Fishing Committee (CLPA) this Wednesday. This tragedy comes a few days after a similar accident on Saturday, where two canoes capsized, causing the death of five people.
According to Mamadou Sarr, CLPA communications officer, the two canoes encountered difficulties crossing the gap. One of the boats carried fishermen from Guet-ndar, a fishing district in the commune of Saint-Louis. Among the occupants, four were missing. The body of one of the fishermen from the other canoe was found. These victims came from Gandiol, a region located south of Saint-Louis.
Mamadou Sarr deplored the non-compliance with the safety instructions issued by the National Agency for Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACIM), which had warned of the presence of dangerous swells. This negligence exacerbated the situation, endangering the lives of fishermen.
The CLPA continues to advocate for strict compliance with safety instructions in order to avoid such tragedies in the future. The situation remains worrying, and search efforts continue to find the missing fishermen.
