Lupa Pizza in Norwich has decided to offer the pineapple option on its online delivery menu at a fairly high price. For the restaurant’s head chef, Quin Jianoran, he simply wanted to take a stand, he told CNN Travel by phone.
“I say ‘no’ to pineapple,” he said. “The Panapoulous brothers mixed sweet and sour Chinese flavors with a traditional Italian product.”
According to CNN, this price is particularly high compared to the price of a can of canned pineapple in a British supermarket.
At this time, Lupa Pizza confirmed to CNN Travel that they have not received any orders for pizza with pineapple. Given that they ran a campaign through the Deliveroo platform, there are many reactions.
“This has taken a huge turn,” Chef Jianoran responded to CNN.
Indeed, this question has divided people for many years. It started in the 1960s after Canadian chef Sam Panapoulos decided to put canned pineapple on a ham pizza. For many, it was a violation of Italian culinary protocol, CNN reported.
Lupa Pizza plans to feature the fruit in its monthly dishes if the results of a survey published in the Norwich Evening News are positive. According to CNN, 62% of respondents in this survey say that pineapple can be part of a pizza.
Chef Jianoran admitted that his opinion might change depending on the poll and maybe even the price of pineapple on pizza. “It could be £200 or £2, who knows?”
