At 100 years old, the Eyrolles group is strengthening the field of human and social sciences and announces for February the launch of a new non-fiction collection dedicated to history.

This collection called “50 objects tell” explores historical periods and figures by the best specialists, with an original treatment – the objects – which gives pride of place to the image.

Editorial shift

« We wanted to create a collection that reflects the richness of exchanges between disciplines, particularly between literature and the social sciences, which too often remain compartmentalized. », explains to Weekly Elizabeth Fiserapublishing manager at Eyrolles, who arrived a year ago from Alisio (Leduc – Albin Michel) to orchestrate this editorial shift.

At the head of this collection we find the publisher Alexandre Maujeanformerly with Tallandier, to direct the series of half a dozen works planned per year. “ One of the biggest challenges is to make complex themes accessible without ever simplifying them to the point of distorting them. “, he explains.

A promising historical market

Each book in the collection will be priced at 21.90 euros and will evoke a period of history through around fifty objects and nearly a hundred photos. “ We have made an effort thanks to our manufacturing department which works on many formats and allows us not to prohibit anything on this subject. », Explains Elisabeth Fisera, aware of joining a market that is already quite mature but developing good dynamics, according to GFK data analyzed by the publishing house.

Already two years ago, the group launched a fiction collection on historical figures, which did not find its audience.

“Scientific rigor and literary creativity”

« There is always a fear that this type of project will be perceived as too elitist or intimidatingnotes Alexandre Maujean. It’s a barrier we must overcome by making complex themes accessible without ever simplifying them to the point of distorting them. » The two project leaders count on expert and recognized authors, capable “ to navigate between scientific rigor and literary creativity », says Elisabeth Fisera.
