From a comic strip on the legendary Japanese fighter Zero to a very original atlas of the D-Day landings, including a monograph on the C-130 Hercules, a biography of a forgotten Aéropostale pilot and a world helicopter encyclopedia…
Wings of legend T2 The Mitsubishi Zero
The Japanese Zero occupies a special place in the Pantheon of World War II warbirds. The first Western pilots to have had to measure themselves against this fighter were Claire Lee Chennault's Flying Tigers, in 1940. After the USA entered the war, at the end of 1941, it was necessary to wait for the Americans to recover a wreck of Zero, in the the Aleutian archipelago, and dissect it, to uncover its secrets. This is the story that Jean-Pierre Pécau and Christophe Gibelin tell in this second volume of the series “ Legendary Wings » dedicated to the Mitsubischi Zero. G.R.

Le Lockheed C-130 Hercules – Vol. 1 : Europe
This first volume is the beginning of a real encyclopedia devoted to the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. Seven opuses are announced. Their publication will obviously be spread over several years. The sum will take stock of Lockheed Martin's C-130 Hercules operations around the world. Xavier Capy, at the origin of this editorial adventure, devotes this first volume to European operators, starting with France which has operated the C-130 since 1987. It has successively operated 16 C-130s in different versions. 4 are still active (2 C-130J and 2 KC-130J), alongside the 3 C-130J and 3 KC-130J of the Luftwaffe stationed on the BA105 of Évreux. F.M.

Vedel the rebel
Bernard Bacquié creates a true biography by Gaston Vedel, a forgotten Aéropostale pilot. If he sometimes contradicts Vedel's memoirs, it is always with kindness and often with humor, considering the pilot's archives. In a pleasant style, the author takes us to discover an exceptional destiny, with a strong temperament, an exacerbated taste for freedom, with “a Don Quixote side which makes him deeply sympathetic”. A very memorable passage saw him confront the famous Didier Daurat, with a legendary character, which led to Vedel being disembarked from the Line. He went through years of scarcity before going to Ethiopia to create the Negus aviation school in 1930. F.M.

Encyclopedia of helicopters since 1945
In the wake of previous volumes devoted to Beechcraft, Cessna and Piper aircraft, Marc Ranjon reviews, in this new opus devoted to helicopters, 42 manufacturers. We enjoy turning the pages of this encyclopedia in which heavyweights like Airbus Helicopters (22 pages), Bell (20), Kamov (7), Leonardo (9), Mil (13), Sikorsky (13) coexist. , and more modest manufacturers like Guimbal who for the moment have only certified the two-seater G-2 Cabri, but who obviously do not intend to stop there. Readers who are less familiar with current events in the aeronautical industry may be surprised to recognize famous Western models in articles devoted to Indian or Chinese manufacturers, for example. D-Day, the great atlas of the Landings
In this year of the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, there has been no shortage of beautiful books on D-Day. If I had to choose one, it would be Stephen Badsey. There is nothing to say about the text. Just savor it. It is meticulously divided into chapters, biographies and thematic boxes which slide into a model which, on 288 pages, highlights 1,500 photos, maps, posters, documents and period objects. A remarkable editing work which makes this book fascinating. G.R.
