Five years after the huge hit of “The Lion King” in live action, Disney studios have released the sequel “Mufasa: The Lion King”, which is in reality a prequel focusing on Mufasa’s youth and accession to the throne. , as well as his rivalry with his brother Scar. It must be said that the original cartoon, with its legendary songs, has become quite simply cult and that its live-action version in 2019 broke box office records, with 10 million spectators in theaters in France for $1.7 billion in revenue worldwide. Not helped by mixed reviews, “Mufasa: The Lion King,” directed by Barry Jenkins, got off to a somewhat disappointing start. Voiced by Tahar Rahim, Jamel Debbouze, Alban Ivanov and even Aurélie Konaté, a former candidate of the “Star Academy”, “Mufasa: The Lion King” accumulated 142,600 admissions during its first day of operation, far from the 630,400 spectators seduced for the remake of “The Lion King” in 2019. In five days, 890,000 curious people even discovered the adventures of Mufasa thanks to a solid base of 683 cinemas throughout France. Here again, the prequel looks grim compared to the 2.56 million admissions recorded for the live action version of “The Lion King” five years ago over the same period. Obviously, the box office of the week was highly anticipated. And it just fell!
Unsurprisingly, “Mufasa: The Lion King” is indeed number one at the box office in France for the week of December 18 to 24, 2024, ahead of “Vaiana 2”, “Under the Nuts” or “En fanfare”. In all, the Disney Studios sequel has a very good score of 1.21 million spectators in seven days, a score which is about to explode thanks to the holidays. For comparison, the first live-action part had 3.2 million seats sold over the same period of time, but it was released in the middle of school holidays and with less competition. Worldwide, “Mufasa: The Lion King” has grossed $154.79 million at present. Note that “Vaiana 2” reached the milestone of 6 million admissions in four weeks in France.
