Phenomenal author, powerful novel and Quebec: our three books of the week

Since the publication of Conversations between friends (2019), the Irishwoman is what we call a phenomenon. Which was amplified with the publication of Normal People (2021) both in its novel version and thanks to the particularly careful and successful series, which was based on it. The young novelist returns with a title where we find what constitutes her singularity and explains her success: an incredible sensitivity, a rare sincerity and frankness between her characters, tasty dialogues, and an increasingly marked maturity.

“Cabin” (Abel Quentin)

Abel Quentin, 39 years old, has become, in just three novels, one of our writers capable of tackling the major current problems of our societies through his books. With The Seer of Étampes (L’Observatoire, 2021), he published a powerful novel on the excesses of cancel culture. With Hut, his new novel, he tackles an even bigger theme: the possible collapse of our civilization when it has exhausted its resources. A pessimistic novel, but enlightening on the crucial issue that faces us.

“Asbestos” (Sébastien Dulude)

How sweet childhood memories can be, even if violence lurks. This is how those of nine-year-old Steve Dubois are revealed. Thanks to Charlélie, a year older, whom he nicknames little Poulin. Asbestosthe first novel by Sébastien Dulude (Montreal, 1976), describes in careful language the great friendship that Steve and Charlélie will share over the course of a year. If these memories are not quite those of Sébastien Dulude, the Quebec author ideally captures emotions and sensations that are ultimately universal.
