In Tunis, the French Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, relaunched this Tuesday the idea of a referendum on immigration, a proposal regularly supported by the right and the nationalists. During his intervention on CNews, Retailleau explained: “When the law does not protect the French, it is necessary to change the law, and I think that on immigration, to regain control, we will need a revision of the constitution which allows us to make a referendum. »»
He added that without referendum concerning immigration, France will not really be able to regain control of this issue, specifying that this will be part of the challenges of the next presidential election. Retailleau made these declarations as part of an interview broadcast by our colleagues on the Anadolu site, where he had previously discussed this subject on February on LCI.
According to article 11 of the French Constitution, the president can organize a referendum on certain subjects, but immigration is not explicitly mentioned. Retailleau had previously pointed out that social reforms could be necessary to include the issue of immigration in a referendum potential. He stressed that it is important that “the sovereign people have to decide, sooner or later, these questions”.
