After only three and a half years, Olaf Scholz leaves the Chancellery – and is now adopted with a large tap. But he won’t completely disappear. Typical Scholz.
“Scholzig” – this word will remain by Chancellor Olaf Scholz. It means: taciturn, rather emotionless, dry like a roll. At least the still managing chancellor can make jokes about himself, as he demonstrated at a handmade speech at a new Year’s reception: “Scholzomat, Olaf der Schweiger. A Hamburg Jung – this does not affect enthusiasm everywhere.”
But a country is more than a handmade speeches at the carnival. Scholz tried it in a coalition for three and a half years, the centrifugal forces of which were large from the start. And that finally broke in the dispute.
Scholz was no longer “Scholzig”, but – very personally – shared his finance minister from the FDP. “Too often, Federal Minister Lindner has blocked laws in a non -material manner, too often he has been small -scale in terms of party politics, too often he broke my trust,” said the Chancellor shortly after the break.
Sober or uninspired?
The man at the top – who promised, “whoever ordered a tour from me also gets them” – is responsible for the end of the traffic light. Because the triple coalition often lacked a clear lead.
It was Scholz who, contrary to all expectations, led the SPD 2021 back to power. This Hamburg Jung with the political experience of decades: Juso-Vice-chief, Federal Minister, first mayor of Hamburg, Vice Chancellor under Merkel. Scholz has done almost everything before he moved to the Chancellery. He could, promised to the country – to his, as he sees it, prudent species: “Keep nerves, stay sober and make the decisions that are to be made.”
Scholz names his style soberly. Critics say he is uninspired, hesitant, detailed and bossy. “In mercilessly convinced of itself,” wrote the Hamburger Abendblatt once.
Chancellor of the turnaround
What Scholz can do is to deal with serious situations: three days after the Russian attack on Ukraine, he found the right tone in the Bundestag. “We are experiencing a turning point. And that means: The world afterwards is no longer the same as the world in front of it. In the core, it is about the question of whether power can break the right (…) or whether we raise the strength to set war strikers like Putin.”
The traffic light under Scholz ‘leadership ended the dependence on the Russian gas, the inflation managed. But always hick -hack – for example about arms deliveries. Dispute and dusting after the Federal Constitutional Court withdrawn from the government’s financial planning.
Opposition leader Friedrich Merz derived the chancellor derogatory to a “plumber of power”. Scholz persistently kept with his core issues: social justice, respect, cohesion. And thus reached fewer and fewer people.
Keep on, even if it hurts
He ruled against falling survey values - even when his own party had long since doubted him. In February only 16 percent in the Bundestag election, more than ever. “This is a bitter election result for the Social Democratic Party, which is also an election defeat …”
The Chancellor was voted out. But Scholz would not be Scholz if he now deleted completely. He leaves the government bank, but remains in the new Bundestag – as a simple MP. Keep on, even if it hurts. This is also typical Scholz.
