Canada Post Employees could return to the picking lines in just over two weeks, the existing collective agreements between the Crown Business and the Syndicate Exposing on May 22.
A strike or lockout would mark the second interruption of the postal service in less than six months, after 55,000 employees disengaged for 32 days in November and December.
Ulrich Paschen, professor of commerce at Polytechnique Kwantlen University, in Surrey, British Columbia, says the union has lost part of its influence now that the celebration period is over.
Experts also stress that the precarious financial situation of Canada Posts could cause him difficulties in achieving the contractual objectives of workers.
-The two parties agreed to resume negotiations last week, with the support of a mediator, after their break in March.
Last year’s strike has left millions of parcels and letters pending as approaching end-of-year celebrations, forcing businesses and consumers to dismember to ship their products until a ministerial directive obliges employees to return to work in mid-December.
“We know that this persistent uncertainty is difficult for your business. We hoped that new agreements would have been concluded at this stage, and bring you this certainty remains our priority, “said Posts Canada in an update on negotiations last week.
The Syndicate of Posts workers qualified the last series of “difficult” negotiations. Salaries, benefits in health and safety, employment of employment and pensions remain its main priorities, he says.
