A massive explosion and a fire rocked the port of Shahid Rajai in southern Iran on Saturday.
The explosion apparently linked to a cargo of a chemical ingredient used to make missile propellers killed 28 people and injured around 800 others according to the latest assessment.
Helicopters and planes have poured water from the air on the fire that was raging throughout the night and until Sunday morning.
The explosion occurred while Iran and the United States met on Saturday in Oman for the third cycle of negotiations on the Tehran nuclear program, which is progressing rapidly.
No one in Iran really suggested that the explosion came from an attack. However, even the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, who directed negotiations, admitted on Wednesday that the Iranian security services are on maximum alert with regard to previous attempts at sabotage and assassination operations intended to provoke a legitimate reaction.
State media communicated the number of victims. But few details have been given on the causes of the fire which started just outside Bandar Abbas and which would have caused the explosion of other containers.
