Folded since the beginning of 2025, the motorcycle market could hope for a customary uplift in April, but it was not completely there. With an overall market at -5.9% for 19,181 registrations (excluding electricity), the slope ceases its dizzying diving in favor of a sweet rise.
« You always need a winter to rock a spring“, By the way that the motorcycle market traditionally marks a break during the winter before leaving more beautiful in the spring. Admittedly, we saw that this scheme was changed after the COVVI-19 crisis with winter quarters at the start of the year which displayed very favorable results but it was a very temporary euphoria.
Since the beginning of 2025, we have experienced a very difficult period with scores of around -20%. There is obviously a mechanical explanation for this with the phenomenon of stock registrations of the end of 2024 to ensure sales of the EURO5 approved models still in stock while the new Euro5+ standard took effect on January 1, 2025.
-The manufacturers, overall – not all registered in abundance at the end of the year, therefore ended up with the EURO5 approved models registered to sell before entering the new Euro5+, or even having to sell the Euro5 and Euro5+ models at the same time and this is obviously the case today. A particular situation which is repeated during changes in standards, but the 2024 transition around 2025 proved to be harsh. The context of economic uncertainties between the war in Ukraine, the wanderings of French politics and the tensions between the United States and the rest of the world obviously do not arrange things. The BPCE group analyzes the household economy in 2025 indicating that the household savings rate should remain very high (17.9%) which does not promote consumption. It is not surprising in a context of inflation with rejected or more carefully thoughtful purchases … And what about the motorcycle and scooter market?
- Small displacement motorcycles, 125 cm3 thermal scooters (A1 and B license) and 125 cc motorcycles undergo this trend with full force. The compulsive purchase of a small motorcycle in the spring is particularly suffering from it.
- We have been witnessing for several years a decentralization of the market; The Paris region gradually empties its two motorized wheels due to the constraints that are multiplying: paid parking in the first place, then traffic restrictions … but the development of the market in the provinces in certain cities does not compensate for this drop.
- The switching market suffers: between telework and the big competition of soft mobility, small displacements are down.
- Motorcycle technical control also has its impact. By his rejection, many bikers have decided to no longer change the motorcycle, which harms VO-VO transactions, but also VO-VN.
At the start of the year, the first quadrimeter, the global market recorded 56,173 registrations, a drop of 16% compared to the first quadrimeter 2024 which was, it is highlighted, very dynamic. In fact, the only April market, with 19,181 registrations is less lowered with a fall which therefore begins a slowdown. Should there be an upturn to come there ??? This is to hope because in terms of the motorcycle market “April and May make the all year round flour” according to an Iberian proverb.
