Alleged feminicide | A trial for murder delayed by “incidents” for weeks

Multiple “incidents” have paralyzed the trial of a man accused of having tracked down and assassinated his ex-spouse with the help of his new flame for weeks. The trial could stretch until mid-June, learned the jury, without even knowing when the cause will resume.

“We suspended a long time. He arrived all kinds of incidents beyond the control of the court and the parties, ”said judge Éliane B. Perreault on Monday morning to the Montreal courthouse.

The trial of Jacques Adonai Charpentier, 41, and Mélissa Estimé, 24, began in mid-March. They are accused of the first degree murder of Odna Daudier in May 2022. The trial has been suspended since mid-April, when the crown concluded its proof.

On Monday, it was the first time in three weeks that the jury returned to the courtyard. Judge Perreault announced to the jurors that they should be available until June 15 for the conclusion of the trial. Initially, the trial was to end at the end of April. Due to the new deadlines, two of the 14 jurors have been excused.

“The duration of the trial is already overwhelmed. He came a lot of time in this case for excellent reasons and for reasons out of control, “said the judge, without giving more details.

As is always the case, the media cannot reveal the content of the audiences which take place without the presence of the jury.

The judge announced to the jury that the lawyers for co -accused Mélissa estimated were absent. M^e Michael Khoury “returned to his assignments to the court”, while M^e Elfride Duclervil is “absent for medical reasons,” said the judge. M^e Hussein Hassan remplace M^e Khoury.

The jurors will not sit this week. Every Friday, sheriff will advise them from the match plan for the following week. The judge had a “good news” for the jurors: their compensation increased to $ 160 per day due to the length of the trial.

A mysterious undetectable poison

According to the crown theory, Jacques Adonai Charpentier was obsessed with his ex-spouse Odna Daudier and did not accept the break. It is in this context that he would have orchestrated a plan with his new spouse Mélissa estimated: to track down the victim with a GPS and kill her.

During the night of May 28 to 29, 2022, Odna Daudier was abducted by two people, while she was in her car. His body was found in an industrial sector in eastern Montreal. The cause of his death was not determined.

According to the evidence presented at the trial, the co -accused Mélissa estimated went to the Dominican Republic to recover the mysterious content of a bottle of coke. For the crown, it is an undetectable “poison”. Multiple vocal exchanges and texts show the two accused exchange during the trip.

“If you see that he starts to rain, do not go down the car in the rain, shelter until the rain stops, it should not be mixed with water,” insisted carpenter in a voice message sent to Mélissa estimated.
