She was no doubt thought of spending discrete family vacation, after her election to the Neuchâtel Council of State last March. It was without counting a charitable soul that recognized it in a five-star hotel, the Shangri-La Al Waha near Mascate, to denounce in Switzerland the elected green in the mode: do what I say, but not what does.
According to calculations by the German newspaper “Blick” which relayed the case, Céline Vara chose a flight which is 5200 kilometers from Switzerland in Oman, nine hours of flight for four people, between 7 and 9.5 tonnes of CO2. Obviously, on the side of its political adversaries, we drink whey to emphasize the inconsistency or hypocrisy to choose a destination so little climato-sympathetic, which is more in a country that is not looking at with human rights defended by the Swiss Greens.
Céline Vara refused to respond to this snapshot avalanche. She said it was “a private matter”. The president of young Ecologists Neuchâtel has defended in general: “Our political fight is of the systemic: we do not aim for personal actions. We can, for example, eat meat while staying in line with the values and convictions of our party ”.
Céline Vara saw others, but there, on the political level, it is delicate. During the debate in the Council of States concerning the initiative of young Greens “for a responsible economy respecting the planetary limits”, Céline Vara had intervened at length to support it, noting that one of the planetary limits concerning global warming was exceeded with the concentration of greenhouse gases.
“Dear and dear colleagues,” she said, “we can choose today to bet in the short term, this is what we have been doing for fifty years … This is where we are: at the gates of economic, societal and environmental collapse. But we can also choose to listen to youth, (…) We can choose a future hand in hand with nature, with the one that gives us life, and not against nature, against the living … “
Obviously, the Neuchâtel had lost the vote. The short -term supporters won until the people, where the initiative was rejected last February by 70% of the vote. It is perhaps, of weary war, that Céline Vara decided to spin towards Oman to change her air with her family. From a political point of view, it is not very consistent, in fact. But it is in human nature to sometimes live in contradiction, to let go and to make a short term.
