The action is in Western Canada
Over the past 30 days, the regions west of the country have been under a negative precipitation anomaly. We therefore speak of a fairly dry sequence of time which creates conditions conducive to forest fires.
Alberta and British Columbia are notably struggling with several forest fires: respectively 270 and 161 forest fires since the beginning of 2025. Besides, these two western provinces normally contribute the most to the annual prize list totaling the number of fires on all the area of Canada. Note that Manitoba has also experienced its share of forest fires for a few weeks.
Until now this year, 17,600 hectares have burned due to Canadian floor vegetation lights. Human activity would be the main cause of these fires in the spring season (for example, 87% of the fires that have declared themselves in British Columbia since the start of the season).
The situation is quieter in Quebec: this is why
For the moment, the vegetation fire season is quite quiet on the Quebec side. For what? The beautiful province was not entitled to many prolonged sequences of good weather. Precipitation days that appear more frequently here and there help reduce the risk of forest fires. Thus, at the beginning of May, there were 48 forest fires in Quebec and the burned area covers 28.5 hectares.
Moreover, the Sopfeu reports that there have been twice as much forest fires as average in April. Wondering what are the regions normally the most affected by vegetation lights in the spring, in Quebec soil? They are often those where snow melts the fastest. In this 2025 spring edition, Estrie, Laurentians, Montérégie and Outaouais have experienced the most forest fires.
To follow …
A heat worthy of summer is still on the menu this week for several regions of Western Canada. Thus, the conditions will unfortunately not help to improve the situation of forest fires.
