“The recap” by Bruno Donnet
Friedrich Merz was finally elected Chancellor on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, after a second round as unexpected as it was out. A first for Federal Germany which, since 1949, had always seen its Chancellors elected in the first round. This period, without direct institutional impact, nevertheless sends a strong political signal. On the day of the election, the German scholarship fell, translating a certain nervousness. Internationally, all eyes were turned to Berlin. The challenges that await Friedrich Merz are up to this sequence: to revive an economy in stagnation for two years, to rearm the Bundeswehr in a context of American disengagement, and contain the climb of the extreme right. To be successful, the new Chancellor will have to quickly score points, especially on illegal immigration, a subject that arouses strong skepticism as to the effectiveness of political action in Germany. The day after his nomination, Friedrich Merz went to Paris and then in Warsaw: a highly symbolic double trip, which suggests a mandate resolutely turned to Europe. France hopes for a new breath for the Franco-German couple. How does Friedrich Merz envisage his duet with Emmanuel Macron?

Free interview / Guillaume Garot: medical deserts, should we force doctors?
-According to figures from the Ministry of Health, 87% of French territory is considered a medical desert. To remedy this, the deputy Guillaume Garot and his supports offer, among other things, a strict regulation of the installation of doctors. If the bill is adopted, each new installation must be authorized by the Regional Health Agency beforehand. In overdotted areas in doctors, a doctor could only settle down following the departure of a colleague. The unions of doctors and medical students see an infringement of the principle of free installation specific to our liberal medicine. The regulation of the installation of doctors had already been mentioned to meet the challenges of medical deserts. François Bayrou has resumed a proposal from the Republican senators who would encourage the doctors of the over-dated areas to exercise two days a month in a medical desert on the basis of volunteer. If the number of volunteer doctors was insufficient, freshly graduated doctors would be forced. Does Guillaume Garot’s bill contravene the principle of free installation of doctors as most of the student unions say?
