Alpine leaves the door open to the potential return of Fernando Alonso within the team.
The double champion left the F1 team at the end of 2022 after the failure of contractual negotiations for a long -term contract. The management of the team controlled by Renault then explained that the age of the pilot, then 41, was a source of concern.
The management of Alpine has since completely changed, especially with the return of Flavio Briatore, a long -standing manager of Alonso. At the same time, the contract with Aston Martin of the 32 time winner of Grands Prix expired at the end of 2026, although he declared that he would remain associated with the brand even after his stopping of the competition.
However, when a book is launched this week, the CEO of Renault, Luca de Meo, insisted on the fact that he still held Alonso in high esteem.
“He is an incredible type. He left Alpine in particular because of an error from us.”
“We may not have treated it as it should have been, but we always have a very good relationship,” added Meo.
“I respect him a lot; he is a great champion and a man with real motivation.”
-“Few are those who have the determination of Fernando. He is an excellent driver. Especially with a car, say, not terrible.”
However, De Meo wished Alonso good luck in his current project.
“I hope he will succeed with Aston Martin because he deserves it.”
De Meo explained that at the same time, he was just fighting to maintain the F1 stable and the afloat manufacturer.
“We lost money every day. Some told me that I was crazy to accept this position.”
“It was already planned to close the stable, which I opposed. I found a way to invest. But in F1, we suffer every weekend. I still haven’t found the algorithm to win.”
