Hans Laliberté, a 52 -year -old man, was found guilty last year by judge Serge Délisle from several counts, including sexual contact on a minor, sexual assault and voyeurism. He brought this verdict on appeal.
Then, on April 14, at the Longueuil courthouse, judge Delisle ratified the common suggestion of the parties and sentenced Hans Laliberté to 4 and a half of detention. He will have to register for 20 years in the register of sex offenders.
Hans Laliberté is not known to the public. But his name is in the credits of many American films. For years, he has been working as a decorator (leadman) on the shooting sets. According to the IMDB directory site, he recently worked on the most recent Transformers and on series The Handmaid’s Tale et Jack Ryan.
A few months before the attacks, Hans Laliberté had gone to China and Cambodia, probably to participate in the filming of the films The Great Wallfeaturing Matt Damon, and First They Killed My Fathermade by Angelina Jolie.
The attacks date back to the mid -2010s. The victim, Paula*, was then about 12 years old. She was part of the entourage of Hans Laliberté. In order not to identify it, we must omit certain elements of the evidence.
Hans Laliberté often made Paula uncomfortable by observing it surreptitiously in the bathroom. Also, once, he helped her put on a top of clothing and took the opportunity to touch her skin and breasts, without her authorization. He was found guilty for these two offenses.
In the summer of 2016, Hans Laliberté violently sexually assaulted the young teenager. In the kitchen, he took it from behind and pushed it on the table. He removed her pants from her and penetrated her.
“She cries. No word is pronounced. She is in pain, she doesn’t understand. […] After the assault, the accused goes to the bathroom. She is confused, blocked, to resume her words. She does not move, ”sums up the judge.
After the assault, Hans Laliberté accompanied his victim, still confused, to the creamy.
A “perplexed” judge
For his defense, Hans Laliberté argued that he had very little frequented Paula and his family in 2016. He claims to remember having seen him only once, in the fall.
“I have in no way participated in this assault. I have no…, zero memory of anything, it is not something that I would do [Paula] Or to anyone, absolutely not, it is against all the values of my body, ”insisted Hans Laliberté for his defense.
The words chosen by the accused are “amazing”, according to the judge, who says he is “perplexed”. “Indeed, the accused does not say that it is an invention or that it has never happened. He says: “I have in no way participated in this assault”, “analyzes the judge.
However, according to the judge, the evidence shows that Hans Laliberté saw Paula in the summer of 2016, despite his denials. He was also in the country during this period. “There is no ambiguity or temporal confusion,” said the judge.
In the eyes of the judge, Paula gave a “frank, direct and clear” testimony, without any vindictive. Despite her age, she remembers very well the events. His testimony is “persuasive and convincing”, according to the judge. His story of sexual assault on the table is also very detailed.
As for Hans Laliberté, his testimony did not arouse reasonable doubt in the mind of the judge.
Me Gabriella St-Onge represented the public prosecutor, while Me Adam Ginzburg et Me Ferial Charef defended the offender.
