The agreement announced Thursday morning is not finalized and many details remain vague, but it has sent a signal to nations around the world, shaken by the American president’s attempt to impose customs duties to upset world trade.
-Under the agreement, the basic customs duties of 10 % on most British imports to the United States would be maintained, while customs duties on steel and aluminum would be lifted.
The customs duties imposed by Donald Trump on British automobile imports would be reduced to 10 % on a quota of 100,000 vehicles.
Fen Osler Hampson, international business professor at Carleton University, says the agreement shows that the Trump administration is willing to negotiate, a positive sign for Ottawa pending examination of the Canada-US-Mexico trade agreement.
Professor Hampson adds that the agreement with the United Kingdom indicates that the White House tenant is open to a drop in customs duties, but that he will probably not eliminate them.
