The sweet potatoes of North Carolina are subject to calls from abroad. Kristi Hocutt, from Triple J Produce, indicates that she receives calls from Europe to stock up. “This means that Egypt has no supply and that Spain has no more,” she said. “Honduras may not have started yet either.
At the national level, demand is also stable and, if the retailers remain largely supplied, Ms. Hocutt indicates that who also demand products. The retailers also sometimes turn to other states to obtain sweet potatoes, such as Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas and others.
Harvest management 2024
This situation follows a harvest of soft potatoes less abundant in North Carolina for 2024. “The situation is tense and we did better than what I had planned at this stage,” said Hocutt, who adds that he manages his supplies to ensure that there are enough sweet potatoes for the greatest possible number of years. “Other players in the industry are also tight – some say they will be short by June or July and we think that we are going to cut very close to the new harvest. This is our goal.” Normally, Triple I ends his exports in May.
What about prices? “They have never been so good since 2012,” said Hocutt. “They could still be higher, but I am satisfied with what we are able to obtain and pay our producers. This has been rewarding this year to know that we give the producers a decent remuneration and that they earn money this year and do not lose.”
She also provides that prices could firm up before the new harvest arrives.
