World Championship: one more reinforcement for Canada

-

After the additions in recent days of Sidney Crosby, Nathan Mackinnon and Marc-André Fleury, team Canada continues to strengthen their training for the IIHF World Hockey Championship, which will be held from May 9 to 25, 2025 in Stockholm (Sweden) and Herning ().

According to journalist Michael Russo of The , Jared Spurgeon, defender and of the Wild du Minnesota, will join the Canadian ranks. The information was confirmed by Bill Guerin, Managing Director of the Midwest troupe.

At 35, Spurgeon will have a experience on the international scene. He never worn the colors of the unifolié neither at the nor senior level. Invited to the selection camp of the national junior team in December 2008, however, he had not been selected. Its presence at the World Cup will therefore be a great first.

During the 2024-2025 , the veteran defended 66 regular season games, collecting 32 points. He also participated in six playoffs, adding a point to his file. His inclusion in Canadian training surprised some observers, who believed that he could have taken advantage of the inter-season to recover from his many injuries. During the two regular calendars (164 possible duels), Spurgeon was only 82 times in uniform. Since the start of his career in the National Hockey (NHL), physical troubles have often slowed him down. In 15 campaigns, he only completed an entire season once, in 2018-2019.
