Following Donald Trump’s new inauguration, some users of the social network Instagram noticed that they were subscribed to the account of the 47th President of the United States and/or that of his Vice President. Created less than a month ago, Trump’s page already has nearly 17 million subscribers, enough to arouse the suspicion of certain Internet users who talk about the “purchase” of followers.
But on the social network side, the explanation would be quite different. “POTUS (President of the United States) Facebook accounts are managed by the White House. They change when the occupants of the White House change“, explains Andy Stone, the spokesperson for Meta, on Threads. In other words, if you already followed Joe Biden or Kamala Harris on Instagram, you are now automatically subscribed to Donald Trump or JD Vance.
