On Monday January 13, the Italian photographer known for his provocative advertising campaigns, Oliviero Toscani, died. He was diagnosed with a serious illness, called amyloidosis, almost two years ago.
Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani, made famous by his advertising campaigns against racism, homophobia and the death penalty, took his last breath on Monday January 13. Aged 82, the artist, who has long collaborated with the clothing brand United Colors of Benetton, had been battling amyloidosis, a rare disease, for almost two years. “It is with immense sadness that we announce the news that today, January 13, 2025, our beloved Oliviero has embarked on his next journey”indicated his relatives in a press release relayed by the Italian press agency Ansa.
In the post, Kirsti Toscani, Oliviero's wife, and their three children called on fans to “reserve” and the “understanding”, “for this moment that we wish to live in the privacy of the family”. For its part, the United Colors of Benetton brand also paid tribute to the famous photographer. “To explain certain things, words are not enough. That’s what you taught us. Goodbye Oliviero. Keep dreaming”wrote the company on its Instagram account, in the caption of a photo of the artist representing a hand holding a bouquet of flowers.
An incurable disease
Last summer, during an interview with the newspaper Corriere della Sera, Oliviero Toscani revealed that he suffered from amyloidosis, a “incurable disease”, stating that he did not know “how long did (he) have left to live”. In just one year, the photographer had lost no less than 40 kg. As a reminder, amyloidosis is a rare pathology, which is characterized by a deposition and accumulation of abnormal proteins in tissues and organs. This can therefore seriously disrupt their operation.
