In 2024, Apple has shelved some of its most controversial products. Here are which

The year 2024 was an opportunity for Apple to clean up its product catalog. And among the devices abandoned by the company, several of them made headlines for the wrong reasons…

iPhone 15 Pro and FineWoven case

Starting with the iPhone 15 Pro, which was only officially marketed by Apple for about a year. Although this is not surprising, as the Apple brand has a history of shelving devices when new ones are released, this specific smartphone has been the subject of controversy on several occasions.

Victim of overheating problems, it was also strongly criticized for its ultra energy-consuming battery compared to the firm’s other recent models. The various updates have not resolved all of these defects, making it one of the least popular iPhones.

The launch of the iPhone 15 range in 2023 was accompanied by the marketing of a new case, replacing the leather one: the FineWoven, or fine weave. Issue, users quickly reported anomalies with this new recycled materialwhich marked at the slightest contact with nails or keys. Some have even reported changes in color and texture, with the appearance of stains and fading of the logo.

Apple acted quickly. The company no longer offers a fine weave case for the iPhone 16, although a variant is available for the Apple Watch bands.

An Apple Watch at the heart of the controversy

2024 also marked the end of the official marketing of the iPad Pro M2 and the Apple Watch Series 9. The tablet has not really undergone a major update compared to its previous version, the iPad Pro M1. Conversely, its accessories drained its battery when not in use, sparking complaints from users.

The connected watch has been at the heart of a lively controversy across the Atlantic. Accused of patent infringementApple was forced to exclude its blood oxygen sensing functionality for several weeks in the country.

Adieu port Lightning

At WWDC 2024, many expected Apple to finally launch the second iteration of its AirPods Max. This was partly the case. If the 2020 version has indeed been shelved, its successor has not really been subject to significant updates, other than the introduction of a USB-C port to replace the Lightning. Enough to disappoint more than one, especially since the headset still lacks basic features such as lossless audio support…

Also, Apple said goodbye to its Magic accessories equipped with a Lightning port, such as the Keyboard and the Mouse. Their new iteration is thus available with USB-C, although the mouse charging port is still located under the device.

  • In 2024, Apple has shelved several products, some of which are very controversial.
  • This is particularly the case for the FineWoven case of the iPhone 15, or even the AirPods Max equipped with a Lightning port.
  • Many of these products were discontinued to make way for USB-C, required by the European Union.
