A fire broke out in a commercial and residential building in the South Korean city of Seongnam on Friday.

SEOUL, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) — A fire broke out at a commercial and residential building in the South Korean city of Seongnam on Friday, possibly trapping several people, local media reported.

The fire began when a restaurant kitchen on the ground floor of the building caught fire, while television images showed the building engulfed in a thick plume of smoke.

The fire broke out at 4:37 p.m. local time in this eight-story building located in Yatap-dong, Bundang district. Firefighters, after receiving several emergency calls, worked to extinguish the fire by deploying around 80 vehicles and other equipment, Yonhap news agency reported, citing local authorities.

Authorities said around 40 people had been rescued and around 50 others had managed to escape on their own. No casualties have been reported so far, according to Yonhap.
