Deborah Bell Photographs presents Out on the Street : The Dining Sheds & Empty Streets of New York, 2020-2024an exhibition of color photographs from two series taken in New York during the COVID-19 pandemic by the Dutch photographer Wijnanda Deroo. This is the photographer’s second exhibition with the gallery.
Deroo is known for her photographs of interiors in which people are generally absent. His series from the 1980s and early 2000s, such as Amsterdam Hotels, Artists’ Studios, Atlantic City, Brooklyn Night, Curaçao, Disappearing Houses, Lower East Side, Mobile Homes and New York Eateries, acknowledge human presence without showing a only person.
Wijnanda Deroo was born in the Netherlands in 1955. She earned a degree in liberal arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem, where she became a professor. In 1989, Deroo enjoyed an artist residency at MoMA PS 1 in Long Island City, NY. Since then, she has lived and worked in New York.
Deroo’s photographs have been exhibited around the world since the early 1980s. His works are in the permanent collections of the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris, the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Central Museum in Utrecht, the Gemeente Museum in ‘Amsterdam, the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, the Jewish Museum in New York, the LaSalle Bank Photography Collection (Bank of America Collection) in Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Moderna Museet in Malmö (Sweden), the National Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in New York and the Museum of Fine Arts in New York; National Museum of Modern Art, Center Georges Pompidou, Paris; Museum Arnhem, Netherlands; Museum of the Jewish Diaspora, Tel Aviv; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Noord Brabants Museum, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands; Printenkabinet, Leiden University, Netherlands; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, among many other public institutions around the world.
