“Afterwards, we no longer wanted to…”: this decisive phone call from Johnny to David Hallyday

David Hallyday continues interviews as he revisits the album he wrote for his father Blood for blood. It is also Johnny Hallyday’s best-selling opus. Tuesday June 18, 2024, for our colleagues from Figaro, the son of the youth idol explained how this project was born. He revealed that
it was Johnny Hallyday who called him to ask him to collaborate together.

When he asked me to work with him, I was still in the United States and I had lost a bit of life in French music. The first thing I said to him was: ‘Thank you, that makes me really happy, but I’m not sure I can be good for you’ (…) He replied: ‘I don’t care about that ‘.” The two men therefore began to work together and it was ultimately very simple for David Hallyday.

Johnny Hallyday really wanted to collaborate with his son, David Hallyday

It seemed natural to me to work with him“, he said again. “A hope of magic was at work during this period of my life. We had spent months together“So it was the rocker who directly asked his son to work with him, without going through the record companies.”I was hesitant at first, but he told me: ‘It’s you I want to work with. I know you’re going to offer me things I like.”

To immerse himself in his father’s world, David Hallyday listened to some of his albums again. He then wanted to reproduce what he could feel when he listened to these songs when he was still a child.

Before this album, father and son were not very close

This album allowed the father and his son to meet again and share new moments together. Indeed, while David Hallyday lived in the United States and Johnny in France, Emma Smet’s father explained that their relationship was reduced to a phone call from time to time. “Afterwards, we no longer wanted to leave each other“, he revealed.

Father and son then managed to create a beautiful relationship of trust. They enjoyed working together again and always had a lot of fun playing the different tracks from the Sang pour sang album.
