Stéphane Bern looks back on the support of his grandparents with emotion

Born into a very strict family, the specialist in history and royal families has always been able to find comfort in his ancestors. It was with tears in his eyes that he confided it to Isabelle Ithurburu in “50′ Inside”.

Mr. Heritage has not always had everyone’s attention. Born into a very strict family, Stéphane Bern has always been able to count on the love and support of his maternal grandparents. It is in the middle of his garden, in his property – a royal college – in Perche, that the presenter of “Secrets of History” spoke about his private life and his childhood in front of Isabelle Ithurburu in the portrait of the week of “50’ Inside”.

“My mom was strict. Tough but a wonderful mother. But at the moment it’s always difficult”, he remembers with fondness. This feeling of rigor was reinforced by the presence of a big brother, like a role model, whom he lost in August 2022. “ I had the misfortune, or the good luck, to have an extraordinary, brilliant older brother and above all he was perfect. And so obviously, my parents had the feeling of having a draft on their side. They always said “what are we going to do with the little one”. »

In fact, Stéphane Bern spent a lot of time with his ancestors. “I loved my grandparents”, he remembers before interrupting himself taken by the emotion of the sobs in his voice. And to continue: “My grandmother loved unconditionally. And so she clashed with my mother. When I could no longer bear the pressure at my mother’s house, I went to my grandparents’ house and there I had all the rights. I was the little prince. I was allowed to watch TV even though my parents didn’t have TV. I was allowed brioche when we had hard bread at home. In fact, everything was more wonderful. »

“It’s surprising, I never talk about it and as soon as someone talks to me about my grandmother, all the emotion comes back”, wonders the 60-year-old man. For his part, his grandfather also had a big role in Stéphane Bern’s life since he gave him a taste of his greatest passion. “My grandfather introduced me to history,” he explains. Thus, from the age of 10, the young boy was more interested in heritage and the past than in the usual concerns of a child of his age. It was then towards the royal families that he turned, for a well-identified reason. “With them, I found a family which – a priori – seemed happy to me. I have since learned that royal families are like ours, they have problems”he joked to Isabelle Ithurburu.
