April 19, 1956, the marriage of Rainier III and Grace Kelly. It was a great event, at once princely, worldly, international and historical. No superlative could succeed in describing the atmosphere of madness which reigned that day in the principality. Peace and serenity followed the frenzy. Happiness, little by little, took hold as if for eternity. Nothing has disturbed the balance and harmony of the princely couple. Princess Caroline, Prince Albert, Princess Stéphanie fulfilled all the wishes. But we sense, imperceptibly, that Prince Rainier and Princess Grace would like, on this 15th anniversary of their marriage, for time to stop. In this month of April 1971, Princess Grace was kind enough to grant Point of view an exclusive interview. Here is what Her Serene Highness the Princess of Monaco confided at the time about her marriage and her daily life on the Rocher des Grimaldi.

It’s a cool April day when the east wind mixes with the mistral. The “Rock”, at this season, is not yet invaded by tourists. Everything there exudes serenity and joy of living. The pinkish beige facade of the Grimaldi Palace offers its eternally cheerful and reassuring appearance. Neither the cannons, nor the enormous cannonballs, nor the martial-looking riflemen succeed in giving it a warlike appearance. On April 19, 1956, the sky over Monaco was also covered with clouds and there were light showers. But it was especially in people’s minds that the storm was blowing. Sovereign Prince Rainier III married Grace, Patricia Kelly. The Monegasques clapped their hands, but no longer knew which way to turn. The number of inhabitants had increased tenfold.
