New features and fidelity characterize the 39th season of the Great Interpreters with two concerts conducted by Tugan Sokhiev, the very popular former musical director of the Capitol Orchestra.

While on Friday evening at the Halle aux Grains, Tarmo Peltokoski will conduct the Orchester National du Capitole before taking over as musical director next September, his predecessor is still in the hearts of residents. A feeling shared by Les Grands Interprètes who entrusted Tugan Sokhiev with the direction of two concerts in their 39e season. “With immense and a lot of emotion, we welcome Tugan Sokhiev twice,” comments Catherine d’Argoubet, director of the Grands Interprètes. “He will first conduct the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra which is also faithful to us before closing the season with the Staatskapelle of Dresden, a legendary orchestra, one of the oldest in the world with which he maintains a close relationship.”

The magic of Tan Dun

But it is with something new and the unprecedented arrival in Toulouse of the China National Symphony Orchestra that the Great Performers season will begin next October. “It’s a diplomatic-musical concert to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Franco-Chinese relations,” explains Catherine d’Argoubet. “It will be directed by Tan Dun with a work of his very original composition, both traditional and innovative, which transports us to a forest with bird songs recorded on mobile phones and mixed with traditional Chinese instruments. very touching”. World-renowned composer and conductor, Tan Dun won an Oscar for the music of the film “Tiger and Dragon” by Ang Lee. The magic will still be there in Toulouse with “Secret language of wind and birds (Mobile symphony poem)”.

Poetry will also be present in the captivating voice of countertenor Philippe Jaroussky, in October; in the violin by Julien Chauvin, illustrated by the choreography of Mourad Merzouki, in December; but also in the daring notes of pianist Khatia Buniatishvili, in March.

The Chucho Valdés tornado

Jazz and world music are also part of the DNA of the aptly named Great Performers with the explosive presence of Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés in March. His Afro-Cuban jazz will be punctuated by a legendary quartet with Armando Gola on double bass, Horacio El Negro Hernandez on drums and Roberto Jr. Vizcaino on percussion. The North American Kenny Barron, another jazz master, will perform as a trio in November at the Halle aux Grains. Without forgetting Samara Joy, the new reference in vocal jazz, winner of two Grammy Awards at the age of 24.
