The United States will deploy “1,500 additional troops to the border” with Mexico to fight illegal immigration, the White House spokesperson said on Wednesday.
Donald Trump made this subject one of his favorite themes during his electoral campaign and, since his inauguration on Monday, he has moved from words to action.
The president declared a state of emergency at the border with Mexico on his first day in office. The sending of 1,500 more soldiers to this area, announced on Wednesday, will bring their number to around 4,000.
“President Trump signed an executive order to send 1,500 additional troops to the southern border of the United States,” Karoline Leavitt said during a brief exchange with the press.
Start of operations “within 24 to 48 hours”
“These reinforcements will be mobilized to set up barriers and for other missions at the border. The first operations should begin in the next 24 to 48 hours,” said a senior military official on condition of anonymity.
-Other means of surveillance and intelligence, particularly aerial, could also be used, added the official.
The American army will also be mobilized to expel migrants by air, said Defense Minister Robert Salesses.
“The department will provide military airlift to assist DHS-led deportation flights of more than 5,000 illegal aliens from the San Diego, Calif., and from El Paso, Texas,” the minister informed in a press release.
Donald Trump also signed a decree on Monday calling into question land rights, even though they are guaranteed by the Constitution.
