Arriving late in the afternoon, Sunday January 19, on the hills overlooking the Israeli military prison of Ofer, in the center of the West Bank, the Palestinians who came to welcome the prisoners released in exchange for the three Israeli hostages waited for hours the departure of the buses to transport them.

In the refrigerated assembly, an 18-year-old girl, interviewed by Agence France-Presse, is impatient to hug her mother, arrested in January 2024, in their home in the northern West Bank. “She will tell us about her stay in prison and we will talk to her about our life without her, I know in advance that there will be a lot of tears”she anticipates, surrounded by her aunt, brother and sister.
-Not wishing to give her name for fear of repercussions for her family, she said that her mother, a nurse, had been arrested for having written or “liked” messages on social networks concerning Palestinian activists. “Ridiculous accusations”she says. Around 1 a.m., when the Israeli authorities finally announced the release of the detainees, numbering 90, cries of joy broke out around the fires lit by their loved ones to keep warm.
